The Guide
The Grand Day Trip, Stop by Stop
What the day covers, what it costs, when it runs, and when another day out suits you better.
The Grand Day Trip around Copenhagen is Hamlet Tours’ day out of the city: a minivan for at most 16 people that collects you from your hotel in central Copenhagen and visits four sights on Zealand in about nine hours. They are Roskilde Cathedral, where 40 Danish kings and queens are buried; the Viking Ship Museum on Roskilde Fjord, with five original ships raised from the water at Skuldelev; Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød, Christian IV’s Renaissance castle and the Museum of National History; and Kronborg in Helsingør, the castle Shakespeare set Hamlet in. The entrance tickets to all four are part of the price, and the guide speaks English.
The short answer
If you have one day to see what lies outside Copenhagen, this is the day that covers the most of it without a car. It costs from US$199 a person on Viator, rated 4.9 from 2,431 reviews on Viator and Tripadvisor (checked October 2026), and the same Hamlet Tours day is on GetYourGuide from US$208 (checked October 2026). Hamlet Tours’ own price is DKK 1,300 for adults and DKK 900 for under-18s, and it values the four entrance tickets at DKK 520 an adult (checked October 2026). Lunch is the one thing you pay for on the day.
Check dates for the Grand Day Trip
It is a long day with a lot of walking and steep stairs, and it is not suited to anyone who does not walk well. From November to February it runs only on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. If the castles matter less to you than a second country or the coast, the cards below cover the other full days out.

The four stops

Hamlet Tours’ Viator itinerary gives the order and the time at each stop:
| Stop | Time there | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Roskilde Cathedral | About 50 minutes | The royal burial church of Denmark, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995 |
| Viking Ship Museum, Roskilde | About 55 minutes | The five Skuldelev ships and their reconstructions, admission included |
| Frederiksborg Castle, Hillerød | 2 hours 15 minutes, with lunch | On your own: the castle, the Museum of National History and the lake |
| Kronborg, Helsingør | 75 minutes, guided | Hamlet’s castle on the Sound, with the guide telling its part in the play |
Times from Hamlet Tours’ Viator itinerary (checked October 2026).
At Frederiksborg you decide how to split the time between the castle and lunch. Kronborg is the guided part of the day. The castle day trip guide covers what each castle is like and the other ways to see them.

When it runs
| Months | Days | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| March | Hamlet Tours’ site lists every day, but its booking calendar shows only Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays through March 2027; check the calendar | 8:30 to 17:00 |
| April | Every day | The calendar shows a 9:15 start |
| May to October | Every day | 9:15 to 18:00 |
| November to February | Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, plus a few days around Christmas | 8:30 to 17:00 |
Days and hours from Hamlet Tours’ tour page and its booking calendar, checked October 2026.
On a December day the sun rises at about 8:37 and sets at about 15:38, so a winter Grand Day Trip leaves and returns in the dark. Hamlet Tours’ Viator itinerary also makes Roskilde Cathedral a photo stop outside from November to March, while its own site lists entry to all four sights. Ask when you book if the cathedral interior matters to you. The winter day trips guide covers what else runs in the dark months.
Booking it: Viator or GetYourGuide
The day is the same on both sites, so book where you already have an account. The booking box on this page opens it on Viator, and GetYourGuide’s calendar sits just under it. Both give a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before. Hamlet Tours emails your pickup time at least 24 hours ahead and asks you to reply to confirm it; pickups are 30 to 50 minutes before the start, from most hotels in central Copenhagen.
Who should pick something else
- Two countries in a day: the Sweden day goes to Helsingør and then across to Lund and Malmö, and costs less, but leaves castle entry to you.
- Nature over palaces: the Møns Klint day trip spends its time at the chalk cliffs and the Forest Tower.
- Only Roskilde: the town is about 25 minutes by train. vikingshipmuseumroskilde.com covers the museum, its tickets and the ships.
- A slower pace: a private car or a two-castle day keeps the walking down; the castle day trip page compares them.
- Who runs the day: the Hamlet Tours page covers the company, its walk and its private tours.
Two Castles, a Cathedral and the Viking Ships

The Grand Day Trip around Copenhagen: Questions
Price, the stops, the winter timetable and how to book it.
From US$199 a person on Viator and from US$208 on GetYourGuide (checked October 2026; GetYourGuide checked October 2026). Hamlet Tours' own price is DKK 1,300 for adults and DKK 900 for under-18s (checked October 2026). It includes hotel pickup in central Copenhagen, the guide, the minivan and the entrance tickets to all four sights, which Hamlet Tours values at DKK 520 an adult. Lunch is extra.
Yes. It is one Hamlet Tours day sold on both. Viator lists it as the Grand Day Trip around Copenhagen and GetYourGuide as the Kronborg, Frederiksborg Castle and Roskilde Tour: the same operator, the same four sights and the same 16-guest cap. Book on whichever site you already use; the booking box on this page has both.
Roskilde Cathedral, the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød and Kronborg in Helsingør. The Viator itinerary runs in that order: about 50 minutes at the cathedral, 55 minutes at the museum, 2 hours 15 minutes at Frederiksborg on your own including lunch, and a 75-minute guided visit to Kronborg. The castle day trip page covers the two castles in more detail.
Every day from April to October; on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from November to February. Hamlet Tours' site lists March as every day from 8:30, but its booking calendar shows only Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays through March 2027, so check the calendar for a March date. Hamlet Tours gives the hours as 9:15 to 18:00 from May to October and 8:30 to 17:00 from November to April, with a few extra departures around Christmas; the calendar shows a 9:15 start in April (checked October 2026). The winter day trips guide covers the short days.
Check when you book. Hamlet Tours' Viator itinerary makes the cathedral a photo stop outside from November to March, while its own website lists entry to all four sights in every month. The cathedral opens at 10:00 from Monday to Saturday and often closes for church services, and the winter day reaches Roskilde around that 10:00 opening. The Roskilde Cathedral guide has the hours and what is inside.
Not really. Hamlet Tours says the day is not suited to people who do not walk well: there is a lot of walking and there are steep stairs, and Kronborg has many stairs and no elevator. A private car day with fewer stops, such as the castle day trips compared on that page, is gentler.
English only, and you can cancel for a full refund up to 24 hours before. Hamlet Tours' guides are Copenhagen locals; the company has run tours since 2012 and never takes more than 16 people. The same 24-hour terms apply on Viator and GetYourGuide.
Yes, but not all four sights in one day without a car. Roskilde is about 25 minutes from Copenhagen by train, Hillerød about 40 minutes by S-train, and Helsingør about 45 minutes, and the Copenhagen Card DISCOVER covers those trains and entry to all four sights. The three towns sit on different lines, which is what the minivan saves you. The best day trips from Copenhagen guide sets out the train days.
