The Best Day Trips from Copenhagen
The best day trips from Copenhagen ranked: the castles and Viking ships day, Sweden, Møns Klint, and Roskilde, Hillerød and Helsingør by train, with prices and times.
The best day trip from Copenhagen for most first visits is the Grand Day Trip around Copenhagen, Hamlet Tours’ minivan day to Roskilde Cathedral, the Viking Ship Museum, Frederiksborg and Kronborg. If you would rather add a second country, the Sweden day crosses to Lund and Malmö; for nature, Møns Klint. And three of the best days need no tour at all: Roskilde, Hillerød and Helsingør are each under an hour by train.

1. The Grand Day Trip
Four of Zealand’s best sights in one day, in a minivan for at most 16 that picks you up from your hotel: Roskilde Cathedral, the Viking Ship Museum, Frederiksborg Castle and a guided visit to Kronborg. The entrance tickets are included, and they would cost DKK 520 an adult at the doors in summer. By train the three towns sit on different lines, so all four in one day is not practical without a tour or a car; from April to September Ophelia Tours runs a similar four-sight day. It costs from US$199 on Viator (checked October 2026), and Hamlet Tours sells the same day on GetYourGuide, whose calendar is here:
From November to February it runs on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays only. The homepage covers the stops and times.

2. Hamlet’s castle and Sweden
Enjoy The Tours’ Hamlet, Lund and Malmö day drives up the coast road to Helsingør for free time by Kronborg, takes the 20-minute ferry across the Sound to Helsingborg, visits Lund Cathedral and the old streets behind it, gives you an hour in Malmö and comes back over the Øresund Bridge. It costs from US$138 a person on GetYourGuide (checked October 2026), less than the castles day, because castle entry is not included: at Kronborg you choose between going inside, at DKK 150 at the door, and walking around the outside. You need a passport: Sweden checks ID on arrival. swedendaytripfromcopenhagen.com covers the Sweden day in depth: the tours, the ferry, Lund, Malmö and the border checks.
3. Møns Klint and the Forest Tower
The day for nature: the 45-metre Forest Tower at Gisselfeld, climbed on a 650-metre ramp, and about three hours at the 128-metre chalk cliffs of Møns Klint, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2025. Møn is hard to reach by bus, especially from November to March, when the bus to the cliffs stops running. The Møns Klint day trip page covers the tour, the stairs and the seasons.

4. Roskilde by train
Roskilde is about 25 minutes from Copenhagen by train and makes an easy half day. Roskilde Cathedral, the burial church of 40 kings and queens, is about a 10-minute walk from the station and costs DKK 80. The Viking Ship Museum is on the fjord, a 20 to 25 minute walk away, and costs DKK 165 from May to mid-October and DKK 130 in winter; vikingshipmuseumroskilde.com covers the museum, the five ships and the summer sailing trips. Under-18s enter both free.
5. Frederiksborg by S-train
Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød is about 40 minutes from central Copenhagen on S-train line A, then a 15-minute walk from Hillerød station. Christian IV built it between 1600 and 1620, and it has held the Museum of National History since 1878. It is open every day of the year from 10:00 to 17:00; adults pay DKK 125, under-18s enter free. The castle day trip guide covers Frederiksborg and Kronborg together.
6. Helsingør and Kronborg by train
The coast line reaches Helsingør in about 45 minutes, with three or four trains an hour, and Kronborg stands on the point at the edge of town, facing Sweden across the Sound. Adults pay DKK 150 at the door or DKK 135 online. From Helsingør the ferry to Helsingborg in Sweden takes 20 minutes, so a Helsingør day can cross the border too.
7. Malmö by train
Trains to Malmö leave Copenhagen Central about every 20 minutes and take about 35 minutes over the Øresund Bridge; an adult single costs DKK 96. Bring a passport or other ID: Sweden runs border checks on arrival. Lund is 10 to 15 minutes further by local train.
The Copenhagen Card
If you plan two or more of the train days, price the Copenhagen Card DISCOVER. It covers trains in the whole capital region, including those to Roskilde, Hillerød and Helsingør (not Malmö), and entry to Roskilde Cathedral, the Viking Ship Museum, Frederiksborg and Kronborg. It does not cover the Forest Tower or GeoCenter Møns Klint.
In winter
From November to February the days are short: the sun sets at about 15:38 in late December. The castles stay open, Møns Klint’s GeoCenter closes, and the Grand Day Trip runs three days a week. The winter day trips guide sets out what still works.
