Day Trips from Copenhagen in Winter

Day trips from Copenhagen in winter: which tours run from November to March, which sights close or shorten their hours, daylight, and the days that still work.

Updated October 2026

Most day trips from Copenhagen keep running in winter; what changes is the light and a few closures. The castles, Roskilde Cathedral and the Viking Ship Museum all stay open, with shorter hours. Hamlet Tours’ Grand Day Trip runs three days a week from November to February. The one day out that suffers is Møns Klint: its GeoCenter and the bus to it close from the end of October to late March, and the minibus day shows no departures from December to February.

Around the winter solstice the sun rises in Copenhagen at about 8:37 and sets at about 15:38, a day of seven hours. A full-day tour leaves in the dark and comes back in it, so the sights, not the scenery from the minivan, are the point of a winter day out.

The Grand Day Trip in winter

From November to February the Grand Day Trip runs on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 8:30 to 17:00, with a few extra days around Christmas; its booking calendar shows the same three days through March 2027. The price is the same DKK 1,300 for adults on Hamlet Tours’ own site (checked October 2026). It is from US$199 on Viator (checked October 2026), and the calendar here is the same day on GetYourGuide:

Two things differ from summer. Hamlet Tours’ Viator itinerary makes Roskilde Cathedral a photo stop outside from November to March, and the winter day reaches Roskilde around the cathedral’s 10:00 opening; ask when you book if the interior matters. And Kronborg closes on Mondays from November to late March, which the tour’s winter days avoid.

Everything north and west of Copenhagen stays open in winter; the long trip south to Møns Klint loses its GeoCenter and its bus.

Days that work well in winter

  • Frederiksborg on a winter afternoon. The museum runs an after-dark edition on winter afternoons, lit by chandeliers, and its Christmas exhibition, Icy Christmas: H.C. Andersen and The Snow Queen, runs from 31 October 2026 to 3 January 2027. Hillerød is about 40 minutes on S-train line A.
  • Kronborg’s Christmas market. On the weekends of 5 and 6, 12 and 13, and 19 and 20 December 2026, in timed slots, at the normal DKK 150 ticket.
  • The castles day by tour. Ophelia Tours runs its castles and cathedral day on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from October to December (its calendar also shows Monday 28 December 2026), and a January-to-March version on Wednesdays and Saturdays, from US$208 (checked October 2026); it goes inside Roskilde Cathedral but skips the Viking Ship Museum.
  • Sweden. Enjoy The Tours’ Hamlet and Sweden day runs Tuesday to Sunday through the winter, from US$126 (checked October 2026). Bring a passport.

Møns Klint in winter

South Zealand Tours’ minibus day to the Forest Tower and Møns Klint runs into November. Its booking calendar shows no departures from December to February, so check the calendar before you plan a deep-winter date. The cliffs and paths stay open all winter; only the GeoCenter, the geology museum at the top of the stairs, closes, and the toilets stay open from 06:00 to 22:00. Without a tour it is hard: bus 678 to the GeoCenter runs only from 29 March to 31 October. The Møns Klint day trip page has the details, and the best day trips from Copenhagen ranks every day out by season.
